The Goethe-Institut San Francisco invited well-known German artists from the Bay Area to create their own interpretation of the 200-year anniversary of the Brothers Grimm. The artists will present paintings, drawings, photos and installations exclusively created for this event and to honor the 200-year anniversary of the Grimm Fairy Tales.

Fasching 2012

This week folks around the world celebrated the end of another Fasching season. We wanted to take a moment to share some photos from our celebration back on Saturday February 6th. Friends and students of the German School gathered at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in the mission, where we danced, played, and shared a meal. Many thanks to the faculty and volunteers who pulled this special event together for our community!

Adventsfeier December 2011

On Saturday December 17th we had a great Adventsfeier. All students performed their poems, skits, and sang holiday songs. Nikolaus visited us and it was a lot of fun. Stollen and Christmas sweets decorated the tables and a delicious potluck was shared through the help all of the parents. A special thank you goes out to the volunteers of the German School of SF for all of their help!

Schneewochenende January 2012

With the passing of another January, we shared another great adventure in the mountains. Snow, or the lack thereof, presented different challenges with which to deal. We were able to use the snow at the lifts because they were closed for public. Nature gave us the possibility to walk in bizarre areas, which was easy to deal with especially for people who are not able to ski. Skiers got their snow-fix artificially at special slopes. Home-made pizza was the hit of our weekend. All kids helped. The highlight of the trip was listening to the children speak German with one another. Enjoy some photos of our trip!

Come and celebrate Fasching!

Fasching, Fastnacht, Fasnet, Karneval–the names differ in the various regions of Germany, but they all mean the same thing: the “foolish” late-winter days, dedicated to merry-making and fun. Dress up in your costumes and join us for this children’s celebration of dance, music, games and art-projects conducted in German.

February 4, from 10:30 am to 1 pm, at ST. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, 3281 16^th Street / Dolores

Suggested donation for non-members : $3 for adults; $2 for children

Schneewochende January 6th – 8th

Once again we invite all families and friends of the German schools in the Bay Area for our annual snow weekend excursion to Heidelmann Lodge in Lake Tahoe near Sugar Bowl. Together, children can discover the snow, go sledding on the nearby slopes, cross country ski, snowshoe or hike. Families will arrive Friday evening. Saturday morning we have breakfast together and then you are free to plan your day any way you see fit. In recent years, dinner has consisted of self-made pizzas, which was a big hit with the kids not to mention a great way to build community. There is time for breakfast together on Sunday morning before making the trek home. Price includes accommodations and meals. Travel and activities are up to you. Laternenfest a success!

On Sunday November 13th, many children, parents and friends of the German School of San Francisco jointly celebrated Laternenfest. First, we gathered in front of Jackson playground recreation center to watch the children perform the play of St. Martin. Then, with guitars in hand, and ornately decorated, handmade lanterns, we sang and paraded around the park. Our celebration was noticed with curiosity by many. Greeting us after the parade was an assortment of delectable treats including apple cider, sausages, sandwiches, and hot potato soup just to name a few. There were many happy faces. Many thanks to all of the members of the German School community for pulling off another heart warming, successful event.

Adventsfeier Saturday December 17th, 2011

On Saturday December 17th we will be having our annual Adventsfeier in the Rist Hall at Mercy High School. All students will participate in this traditional Holiday performance by reciting poems, performing skits and singing holiday songs. Nikolaus will visit us and bring goodies for the children and Stollen and coffee will be served. Please bring a thermos bottle with coffee or tea.

Admission: Adults $ 5.00. Children are free.

Laternenfest – Saint Martin’s Day 11/13/11

On Sunday, November 13th, we invite all members and friends of the school to join us for our traditional Lanternenfest in celebration of St Martin’s Day. Bring your lanterns and sing the traditional Laternenfest songs we practiced at school while we stroll the streets of San Francisco. Refreshments will be served. Suggested donation: $5/adults and $2/child.

We will meet at 6:00 pm at Jackson Playground (1501 17th St, Cross Street Arkansas)
